Mr. Appel is a professional money manager, directing the management of Investor assets for more than thirty-five years. Besides being a professional investment advisor, he has authored or co-authored more than fifteen books, as well as numerous articles, relating to investment strategies. He is a recognized expert in the field of technical market analysis.

MACD (Moving Average Divergence-Divergence) Indicator , invented in 1979 by Appel, is one of the most popular technical indicators in trading. MACD is appreciated by traders the world over for its simplicity and flexibility because it can be used either as a trend or momentum indicator.

Mr. Appel is one of the most prolific inventors of technical trading tools, many of which have become popular worldwide. The MACD (Moving Average Convergence-Divergence) and MACD-Histogram, are considered essential trading tools by many traders. The MACD is used for charting by investors and money managers alike, on major financial websites and in technical analysis software packages.

Professional Qualifications

Mr. Appel holds degrees from Brooklyn College and NYU Graduate School of Social Service. He is a former practicing psychoanalyst, and an award-winning photographer.

In 1973, Gerald Appel founded Signalert, a registered investment advisory company which handles a half-billion dollars of client assets. Gerald Appel is the President and and Chief Operating Officer of Appel Asset Management, and President of Signalert Corporation. Signalert also publishes the technical newsletter Systems and Forecasts, highly rated by The Hubert Financial Digest and by Timer Digest for its performance in market timing.

He has been managing discretionary client accounts for more than thirty years. His investment style focuses on protecting assets and managing risk. Portfolios are structured to meet the needs of individual investors. He is an active trader in stocks, options, ETF's, mutual funds and other securities. Besides developing the Moving Average Convergence-Divergence (MACD) Indicator, Gerald Appel has written authored or co-authored more than fifteen books relating to investment strategies, including Winning Market Systems, Double Your Money Every Three Years, Stock Market Trading Systems, The Big Move, New Directions in Technical Analysis (co-author, Dr. Martin E. Zweig), and Time-Trend III. Gerald Appel’s books have been translated into five languages; two have received the coveted “Book of the Year Award” from Yale Hirsch’s annual publication, “The Stock Trader’s Almanac.”

In addition, Gerald has had many articles published in such publications as Money Magazine, Barron’s, Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities Magazine, Stocks Futures and Options Magazine, Wealth Magazine, the New York Times, Forbes, Kiplinger’s Magazine, and many more. He has also produced and appeared in a number of videotapes related to technical investment strategies.

Along with his son Dr. Marvin Appel, Gerald Appel is the editor of Systems & Forecasts, a newsletter he founded in 1973 that is read by money managers, analysts, and private investors around the world. This semi-monthly publication has been recognized on the Forbes Honor Roll.

Dr. Marvin Appel is CEO of Appel Asset Management Corporation and Vice President of Signalert Corporation, Registered Investment Advisors in Great Neck, New York, which together manage more than $300 million for individual clients. He also edits the highly acclaimed investment newsletter, Systems and Forecasts, and has authored Investing with Exchange Traded Funds Made Easy (FT Press, 2006).

He has been featured on CNNfn, CNBC, CBS, and, and has presented at conferences ranging from the World Series of Exchange Traded Funds to the American Association of Individual Investors. The New York State Legislature has invited Dr. Appel to present his economic and investment outlook.


Mr. Appel remains actively involved in his work. His most recently published book (2008), “Beat the Market – Win With Proven Stock Selection and Market Timing Tools,” has been released By Prentice-Hall. He remains actively involved in the management of Appel Asset Management Corporation as well.
