The week ahead in the stock market may be a little quieter, with light trading volume and minimum staffing. But this may be a week, also, where serious profits could be made if opportunities are undertaken when buying on the dips that are unrelated to the U.S. economy.

Besides the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes, which will likely be the key focus during the week ahead in the stock market, as traders look for clues on the first rate hike in years, there is a good helping of economic reports, including housing starts Tuesday and home sales Thursday. There's also CPI consumer inflation data Wednesday and jobless claims and the Philadelphia Fed survey Thursday.

On top of this, retail earnings will hit full stride, with blue chips Home Depot Inc and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., as well as American Eagle Outfitters, Staples, Inc., reporting. Retailers could see some decent sales after recent revisions showed better-than-expected activity in the second quarter.
